Shortly after opening his office in 1930 the architect Karl Kohlbecker began to commute between Gaggenau and Berlin. The idea of “humane factories” led to contracts with Daimler-Benz AG, for the Volkswagen plant in in Fallersleben, for VDO, ATE, and the Rautalwerke factory in Wernigerode, which quickly led to a staff of 100 employees at the Berlin office. Today, 150 staff consult, plan and build projects for Kohlbecker Gesamtplan GmbH.
In 1959, Christoph Kohlbecker began a cooperation with his father, and his brother Peter joined them in 1974. The combination of the “old man’s” know-how and the new knowledge of his younger associates guaranteed the continuity and quality necessary to foster client loyalty and the level of commitment needed for a range of many different types of projects.
Matthias Kohlbecker joined the office in 1993 after having been a member of the team that worked on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.
Almost 10 years later, in September 2002, his brother Florian Kohlbecker also joined the company after finishing his studies at the BTU Cottbus and working for Renzo Piano in Paris.
Over the last decades the focus of architecture offices and that of Kohlbecker | Architects & Engineers has been on the planning of production facilities, administration and social buildings, as well as schools and cultural centers and residential projects both in Germany and abroad.
The cooperation with the Daimler AG group spans almost 80 years. Other major clients and projects include work for IBM Germany, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, Schott Glaswerke in Mainz, branches of Dresdner Bank AG, Frankfurt, SEW Eurodrive and the BHF-Bank, as well as the Berliner Handels- und Frankfurter Bank, BMW AG, Audi AG, DHL, Deutsche Post AG, Purem, Roche Diagnostics GmbH and many others.
The State of Baden-Württemberg is one among many communities and clients in the small and medium sized industrial sector, along with private clients.
Projects such as the construction of a factory of top-loading washing machines for Bosch Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH in Nauen and Nanjing, China, or the central distribution plant for the Tchibo group in Zarrentin and the renovation of historical buildings are but a few examples of projects that have broadened the scope of Kohlbecker activities since the nineties.
In 1992, Kohlbecker won the 1st prize in the competition for the development of the Daimler-Benz AG site on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin together with the office of Renzo Piano, Paris.
The “Kohlbecker Vision” has passed the threshold into the new millennium and sees its greatest opportunities in its great variety of services. The respective areas are in the hands of experienced specialists in fields such as: industrial, office and urban construction, as well as cultural centers, hospitals, spas, master planning and renovation projects, all of which are completed at home and in other countries.
