Winning Competition Entry: Kohlbecker to plan sports facility
Kohlbecker won the competition for the new gymnasium in Forbach in the German Black Forest. The design is based on the idea of creating a structure that creates an ensemble together with the neighboring school. The building volume is slightly lowered, thus reducing its mass with respect to the smaller-scale surrounding facilities.
The gymnasium entrance creates a common space along with the courtyard recess area that can be used flexibly during school hours and for events. At the same time, this level can also be used as a spectator stand. The clubroom features separate outside access and can also be used as a gymnastics hall. The actual gymnasium is on the level underneath and a garage is planned for the lowest level. The plan also features an earth-sheltered flat roof with seating areas and a small playing field.
The façade features delicate horizontal structuring on its wood cladding that dissolves into glass paneling as it separates the wood from the granite segments above the vitrification elements. The façade opens to the west and offers a panoramic view of the Murgtal Valley landscape.
